Prominent Cuban writer Julio Travieso dies in Havana

Distinguished writer, professor, and journalist Julio Travieso Serrano died in Havana at the age of 85, the Cuban Book Institute (ICL) reported.
The Ministry of Culture and the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) conveyed their condolences to his family and friends in an official statement remembering his career as a renowned Cuban intellectual.
Born on April 11, 1940, he studied Law at the University of Havana, complemented his education with a Master of Science degree from Lomonosov Moscow State University, and obtained, in 1985, a Doctorate in Economics from the Institute of Latin America of the Soviet Union Academy of Sciences.
He performed meritorious work as a journalist and professor at the University of Havana, and taught at other academic institutions in Spain, Russia, and Mexico.
Throughout his life, he received important literary awards, including the Mazatlan Prize for Literature from Mexico and the Literary Critics’ Prize from Cuba.
For the significance of his work, considered a benchmark within Cuban fiction, he was awarded the National Prize for Literature in 2021.
His revolutionary merits earned him the Medal of Combatant of the Underground Struggle, which he received in 1985, the ICL (Cuban Institute of Literature) statement recalled.
He was also decorated with the National Culture Distinction and the Alexander Pushkin Order, awarded by the Russian State.
