The Advisory Council for the Development of Monumental and Environmental Sculpture (Codema) is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, the National Sculpture Salon was inaugurated today in the capital.
The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, located in the heart of Old Havana, hosted an extensive collection of sculptural works by various artists, selected from a call that included more than 50 participants.
The exhibition's organizers stated that "Codema has led multiple sculptural events, in addition to exhibitions, colloquiums, competitions, and bids, providing professional opportunities for the development of this art form."
They emphasized that "the work and responsibility of Codema as a guarantor of artistic quality for the placement of monumental and environmental works in our public spaces has earned it the respect and recognition of artists and state institutions." Furthermore, it was announced that "Codema will support exhibitions in various provinces across the country in the coming months, where art sometimes becomes inaccessible."
During the inauguration of this National Sculpture Salon, reference was made to the work fostered by the aforementioned council in the creation of many of the country's existing squares and monuments.
Its work is also reflected in the artistic settings of various hotel institutions, university centers, and health facilities, all of which constitute valuable collections of Contemporary Cuban Art.
According to its organizers, the celebration of this 40th anniversary, alongside the opening of the salon, signifies a renewed commitment to the continuity of Codema's work.
Likewise, the Museum of Fine Arts will host a colloquium on November 19, 20, and 21 as part of the extensive program of activities for the anniversary. Prominent panelists will participate, delivering keynote lectures on contemporary Cuban sculpture.
The exhibition inaugurated today, organized as a salon, aims to provide a participatory space for all interested artists.
