Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center turns 40

On the occasion of its four decades, the Havana-based Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center invites you to enjoy a program of events marked by the fusion of various aesthetic expressions.

Founded on February 28, 1983, the institution investigate and promote the work of the great Cuban visual artist, one of the most important artists in the 20th century, and as well as creations from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean.

As explained in the commemorative program, the Open Library exhibition, scheduled for February 28, will organize book sales, while the digital platforms associated with the institution will disseminate the call for the Wifredo Lam Creation and Research Scholarships.

Other events will be the presentation of the Catalog of the 14th Havana Biennial, an event of great international importance in the field of visual arts in Cuba and organized by the Wifredo Lam Center in coordination with several local cultural institutions.

The celebration, which also exalts the legacy of the painter of The Jungle (1942), will close with a concert by Charlie Gonzalez, on the 120th anniversary of Wifredo Lam’s birthday in the city of Sagua la Grande, in Villa Clara province.

Lam was acknowledged as a visionary and rehabilitator for his time, in addition to a fighter against banality.

According to researchers, the artist moved in the realm of subjectivity, but also inspired those around him and successive generations of painters, both nationally and internationally.
