The Fayad Jamís Bookstore in Havana is preparing to host the launch of Privilegiados del tiempo. Recuerdos de periodistas de la radio y la televisión (Privileged by Time: Memories of Radio and Television Journalists), a book blending rare photographs and firsthand accounts of those who shared historic moments with Fidel Castro.
Authored by Ovidio Cabrera and Irma Cáceres, the volume features over 100 photographs and nearly 30 testimonies from Cuban journalists and broadcast technicians who worked closely with the revolutionary leader. The event will include a discussion with the authors and Norma Gálvez, director of Ediciones En Vivo, the book’s publisher, moderated by journalist and critic Fernando Rodríguez.
According to its editors, the book offers an intimate portrayal of Castro, capturing his interactions with media professionals both in Cuba and abroad. They describe it as "a valuable educational tool for new generations to appreciate the extraordinary human qualities of Fidel Castro Ruz."
Cabrera, a pioneer in Cuban television news and co-founder of Canal Caribe and Telesur, spent over a decade directing Noticiero de Televisión. Cáceres, a 2012 recipient of Cuba’s National Journalism Award, served as head of Prensa Latina’s foreign correspondents and as a commentator for Cuban TV news programs.
The Cuban Book Institute highlighted the work as a testament to Castro’s enduring legacy in Cuban media history. The launch is set for Wednesday at the iconic Havana bookstore.
