The Palestinian Center for the Defense of Prisoners today accused the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) of intensifying ill-treatment against detainees and warned that the new policy has become systematic.

The IPS repression units increased raids on sections and cells of prisoners, brutally assaulting them daily under unjustified pretexts, the organization reported.

In this regard, he warned about the use of sound bombs, tear gas, batons and police dogs against prisoners.

Palestinian prisoners suffer from overcrowding, poor ventilation, poor nutrition and poor health coverage, he said.

In recent months, both the government and Palestinian parties and non-governmental organizations have reported increased repression at these facilities since the start of the current cycle of violence in October 2023.

The Israeli NGO HaMoked revealed earlier this month that the total number of Palestinian prisoners exceeded 11,000, a record number in the past 23 months.

HaMoked accused the authorities of preventing visits to prisoners by the International Committee of the Red Cross and their families.

The Prisoners’ Information Office warned last month that the number of detainees is the highest since the Second Intifada, as it is known from the national uprising from 2000 to 2005.
