especiales

The International Day of Action against Migraine is observed every September 12th, focused on raising public awareness about this highly prevalent condition and its significant impact on human health.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, this disease ranks among the top 20 most disabling conditions globally and is the leading cause of disability in people under 50 years of age.
Understanding the Condition
Migraine is characterized by severe headaches and is described as an episodic disorder consisting of recurrent attacks of cephalalgia, with throbbing or pulsating pain, especially on one side of the head.
Experts indicate that this ailment, also known as a sick headache, occurs because nerve cells in the brain generate intense electrical activity that affects functions such as sight, balance, muscle coordination, sensitivity, and language.
There is a genetic predisposition, as approximately 80 percent of patients have a family history, medical sources note.
Demographics and Impact
It occurs more frequently in women than in men, and its duration can vary from a few hours to days, depending on the individual.
According to the WHO, migraines and other headaches can affect work capacity, diminishing productivity and interpersonal relationships.
And although it is one of the 20 most disabling conditions worldwide, only 40 percent of those affected receive an adequate diagnosis and treatment.
Purpose of the Day
One of the main purposes of the International Day of Action against Migraine is to reinforce the fight against this ailment and to inform society about it.
Among the problems presented by migraine is the very lack of knowledge about the disease, both among doctors and patients. Therefore, it is considered necessary to raise awareness about the associated pain, its impact and consequences, and to improve the quality of life for sufferers.
