The 21st "Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam" Drum Festival will begin today with dance and music master classes and live performances at different venues in Havana.
In a recent press conference, Giraldo Piloto, musician and president of the organizing committee, explained that the event will pay tribute to notable personalities of Cuban popular music who are no longer physically present, but whose legacy will remain for future generations, among them Juan Formell, Cesar Pedroso (Pupi), Jose Luis Cortes (El Tosco) and Adalberto Alvarez.
The centenary of Carlos Embale, an indispensable personality of Cuban son and popular music, will be commemorated, he said.
Piloto also informed that the Fiesta del Tambor will once again reach the communities, in order to take the presentations to those who do not have the opportunity to attend the big theaters.
He stated that these shows in the neighborhoods respond to the initial objective of the Festival: to bring art, culture and traditions to all corners of the country.
Jennyselt Galata, dance teacher, pointed out that from March 6, the Tropicana's Arcos de Cristal hall will be the venue for music and dance master classes, this time dedicated to how to play, sing and dance the different Matanzas rhythms, among them the arara.
All these actions are aimed at a better preparation of artistic education students and professionals in terms of dance and music genres that identify Cuba.
The 21st "Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam" Drum Festival will conclude on March 10.
