The China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG), specialized in tunnels and subway engineering, will be in charge of building the underwater section of Line 3 of Metro de Panama, the company announced.

A press release from the firm stated on Saturday that the aforementioned section will consist of six kilometers and will be 66 meters larger than Line 1.

The tunnel will be built under the Panama Canal, on the Pacific side, and will be part of Line 3 of Metro de Panama, which is expected to be opened in 2026.

Metro de Panama informed that CRTG has already signed a contract with the South Korean consortium HPH Joint Venture, which is accountable for the new route leaving from Albrook station to the towns of Arraijan and Nuevo Chorrillo, reaching Ciudad del Futuro, in Arraijan district. In sum, the route will be around 26.7 kilometers long and will have 14 stations.

The signing of the deal was witnessed by Cho Quan, group deputy general manager of the China Railway Tunnel Bureau; and Kim Young-ho, vice president of South Korea’s Modern Engineering Construction and project manager of the HPH consortium.
