Portugal's star, Cristiano Ronaldo, was sent off for elbowing Irish defender Dara O'Shea in the second half of their World Cup qualification match on Thursday.

Ronaldo now faces a risk of a two-match suspension, which would rule him out of the first match of the World Cup tournament, should Portugal qualify.

Ronaldo threw his right elbow into O'Shea's back around the hour mark at Aviva Stadium, while Ireland maintained a surprising 2-0 lead.

The referee initially showed a yellow card but changed it to a red card minutes later following a video review.
