President Xi Jinping's letter is a recognition of Cuban science as a whole and the progress made in China-Cuba cooperation, Cuban doctor Pedro Valdés said on Wednesday.

In statements to Prensa Latina, the scientist referred to the letter he received from the Chinese president and described it as a sign of the bonds of friendship and cooperation that unite both nations.

In addition, “his warm tone and concern for the destiny of humanity confirmed the impression I have of him as a great statesman,” he added.

Valdés is the director of the China-Cuba Joint Laboratory of Neurotechnology in Chengdu, Sichuan province. He recently wrote to the Chinese president about the progress of the two countries’ scientific cooperation.

“I think it was necessary to emphasize how important it is to extend these results to other countries of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and take the megaproject as a concrete vehicle to bring this progress to humanity,” the doctor explained.

Valdés coincided with Xi that advances in science and technology are a priority within the BRICS.

In his letter, Xi stressed the “strong friendship” between the two nations, “forged by the older generation of leaders.”

“I express sincere hope that China-Cuba cooperation in several fields, including technology, continues to deepen in this new era to the benefit of the people of the two nations,” the president wrote.
