Venezuela Bets on Sovereign AI with Technological Support from China

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro confirmed on Monday that through technological partnerships with the People’s Republic of China, the country will promote the creation of a fully Venezuelan and sovereign artificial intelligence.

Emphasizing that this AI must integrate the nation’s history and unique characteristics, the head of state underscored the importance of developing an artificial intelligence that represents the peoples of the Global South.

"Venezuela has a strong alliance with China to build our own artificial intelligence," Maduro stated, insisting that this is positive news for the country’s youth. He stressed the need to "construct our own AI, with our own history," while warning that a new form of colonialism is emerging through technology, communications, and artificial intelligence.

Advocating for a "balanced approach to artificial intelligence," Maduro argued that current AI tools are biased by the interests and perspectives of imperialist and colonialist Western powers.

"It is possible," the Venezuelan leader affirmed.
