The representative of the Pan-American Health Organization and World Health Organization in Cuba (PAHO/WHO), Jose Moya, on Tuesday called on the international community to generate changes in healthcare systems to make them more inclusive.

This is an urgent need, as it will allow real access to health care as a basic human right, Moya said at a press conference at PAHO/WHO headquarters in Havana on the occasion of World Health Day, which is celebrated on April 7.

Three out of every ten people in the world cannot access them, and one out of every four faces unaffordable expenditures.

“This is an expression of inequality that affects the most vulnerable populations,” said Moya. For the dream of achieving health care for all to become a reality, we need people and communities that have access to quality services, with qualified personnel committed to solid primary care.

The Covid-19 pandemic and other emergencies demonstrated the imperative of making large investments in this sector, generating action plans that guarantee better protection and preparation of systems to face future epidemics.

Moya highlighted the work done by WHO from 2020 to 2021 after having been involved in 87 emergencies, and a new global agreement on pandemics is currently being drawn up, which is being consulted with the 194 member States with the aim of having a strategy aimed at safeguarding new generations.

WHO will celebrate its 75th anniversary under the theme ’75 years of improving public health’ and the global slogan is Health for All.
