Geneva, Dec 14 (Prensa Latina) The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Monday that 1.8 billion people who work in hospitals are at heightened risk of getting sick due to lack of water in those facilities.
'Water, sanitation and hygiene are vital to the safety of health workers and patients, but provision of these services is not prioritized,' WHO stressed in a statement.
These personnel can get ill from Covid-19 or contract other infections, the source points out.
The worst situation is found in 47 of the world's least developed countries, where one in two healthcare facilities does not have basic drinking water, one in four lacks hand hygiene facilities at points of care, and three out of five have no sanitation service.
The work of medical personnel without proper hygiene in institutions is equivalent to the work of doctors without personal protective equipment, WHO says.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom emphasized that water supply and sanitation play an important role in the fight against Covid-19.
