At least 73 people have been killed in August so far as a result of the violence Haiti is mired in, as denounced by the National Network in Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH).

The organization also stated that the victims and their relatives consider that the Police do nothing to protect them from the armed gangs, thence the inaction of the police allows the government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry to justify, before the international community, its request for foreign military intervention meanwhile protecting the gangs and retaining power.

In addition, the platform criticized the attitude of the director of the Police, Frantz Elbé, who, in its opinion, orders the agents to bombard the population with tear gas whenever they demonstrate peacefully in demand of protection and aid from the State.

The RNDDH also denounced the inaction of the Superior Council of the National Police, reminding that the rights to life, security, physical and psychological integrity, and private property are fundamentals enshrined in the Constitution.

The systematic violation of these rights by the rulers should encourage the victimized population to rise up and organize themselves to resist the state “gangsterization” of the the country.

Nevertheless, the government has promised to fight gangs so that residents can return to their homes and announced that it will offer assistance to victims.
