Washington, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of people on Saturday took to the streets in the United States to call for the approval of a federal legislation on the right to vote, stalled in Congress.
On the 58th anniversary of Martin Luther King's historic speech 'I have a dream', demonstrations get a greater overtone, as the right to vote is in the center of public attention and the Republicans are trying to restrict it.
The rallies started off at McPherson Square, Black Lives Matter (BLM) Square and the National Mall.
'What do we want? The right to vote. When do we want it? Now!,' a group of protesters shouted.
The legislation is a top Democratic priority after the November 3 election, though some civil rights leaders recently expressed their frustration with President Joe Biden.
Currently, the Republican-controlled legislatures considered or approved bills to limit the access to the polls.
According to the March On organization, 48 states have introduced 389 bills since January, equivalent to a 'total suppression of voters,' The Hill newspaper reported.
