United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres alerted about a global development emergency and the delays to meet the 2030 Agenda, as he addressed an ongoing High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Guterres said that only 35 percent of the goals established on the roadmap are on the right way or are slightly progressing, while the world is only five years ahead of the established deadline.

He said the world is in a world development emergency, which is revealed by the over 800 million people still living under extreme poverty. He also warned about the intensification of climate change consequences and the debt killing the resources the countries need to invest n their own people.

The UN Secretary General said that there are deep links between underdevelopment and conflicts; he stressed the need to keep working for peace in the Middle East, Sudan and other territories.

He also urged to work in areas like food systems, energy, the digital world, education, employment and environmental management.

The Sustainable Development Goals can still be reached, but only if we act urgently, with unity and unbreakable determination, Guterres pointed out.
