Marifélix Sarría and Ludia Montero will represent Cuba at the 90th edition of the World Weightlifting Championships, to be held in the Norwegian city of Forde from October 2 to 11.

The Granma native Montero, the first Cuban woman to win a world medal in the discipline, will compete in the 48-kilogram division. Sarría, last year’s junior world champion, will take part in the +86 kg category.

The Cienfuegos-born athlete also boasts the remarkable fourth-place finish achieved at the previous World Championships, held in Manama, Bahrain, in 2024.

Reinaldo Ramírez, the national commissioner, confirmed that the small Cuban delegation is expected to depart for the host city on Sunday, September 28.

The world event, featuring eight divisions per gender, is set to bring together nearly 300 male lifters and more than 280 female athletes, representing some 120 nations.

The men will compete in the 60, 65, 71, 79, 88, 94, 110, and +110 kg categories. The women will vie in the 53, 58, 63, 69, 77, and 86 kg divisions.

According to the schedule released by the tournament organizers, the women’s 48 kg class will “open the competition program”, while the +86 kg contenders will “close the event.”
