Train Derailment in Southern Mexico Leaves 13 Dead, Dozens Injured

A serious train derailment in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, on December 28, has resulted in at least 13 fatalities and 98 injuries. The Transoceanic Train derailed near the city of Nizanda.
According to information from the Mexican Navy, there were 250 people on the train at the time of the incident, including 241 passengers and 9 crew members.
The catastrophic outcome left at least 13 dead and 98 wounded. Of the injured, 36 are receiving intensive medical care, while another 139 passengers are reported safe.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on social media: "Five of the injured are in critical condition." She announced that senior officials had been dispatched to the site to assist the victims' families.
The governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, also expressed his deepest condolences and affirmed that the state government is working closely with federal agencies to respond to the tragedy.
Regarding the investigation, Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos confirmed: "The Attorney General's Office of the Republic has opened an investigation into the matter."
The Transoceanic Train is a key piece of the Transoceanic Corridor project, inaugurated in 2023, which aims to modernize the railway line crossing the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to connect the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico.
The project is expected to become a strategic commercial corridor, expanding infrastructure to create a route that competes with the Panama Canal, while boosting economic development and transportation networks in southern Mexico.
