Tens of thousands of people demonstrated this Sunday in Brussels, the capital of Belgium and the European Union, to call for a ceasefire in Palestine, in a mobilization called under the slogan “Stop Genocide.
Between 20,000 and 80,000 people, according to the police and organizers respectively, attended the protest organized by 60 civil society organizations.
During the demonstration, which took place in the centre and south of the city, some of the participants carried cooking utensils, such as pans and pots, to make noise “in contrast with the silence before the famine in Gaza”, said the Belgian agency.
The mobilization coincided with the 77th anniversary of the “Nakba” (“catastrophe” in Arabic), as the “expulsion of Palestinians from their lands during the creation of Israel in 1948 and the subsequent process of dispossession” is known.
Organizers urged the Belgian government to act urgently in the face of the human disaster “deliberately caused by Israel in Gaza” and in the face of “Israel and the United States’ plan to ethnically cleanse the enclave.”
In particular, they demanded the introduction of a complete military embargo and the suspension of the association agreement between the EU and Israel.
In addition, they indicated that Belgium must comply with its international obligations and with an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the occupation of the Palestinian Territory, which establishes responsibilities for third States.
The organizers demanded to include “measures to impede trade and investment that contribute to the maintenance of the unlawful situation created by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” as well.
