Damascus, Mar 24 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad met on Wednesday with Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to discuss humanitarian cooperation.

We appreciate the ICRC's role and efforts to provide assistance in different sectors, particularly in health care and education, Mekdad said.

The diplomat urged international organizations operating in Syria to comply with their humanitarian responsibilities and adhere to international humanitarian standards so that aid can reach those who deserve it.

The foreign minister attributed the suffering of the Syrian people to the systematic onslaught launched by Western countries and the blockade and sanctions imposed by the United States and its European allies.

In turn, Maurer revealed that the ICRC intends to expand its actions in Syria in sectors such as health care, water, electricity and education, among others.
