The relationship with Cuba will be maintained; it is “a sovereign decision and has much to do with the humanism we represent,” stated President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, responding to the U.S. government's suggestion that Mexico reconsider its support for the island.

Sheinbaum Pardo asserted that “people should not suffer; the blockade is a very complex action” for them, and insisted that “it is the people who suffer.”

Therefore, she emphasized, “our position regarding Cuba will be maintained, as it has been since (Adolfo) López Mateos.”

The President mentioned that this issue “has been a difference” between the United States and Mexico since the Cuban Revolution, but “it should not influence” the relationship between the two countries.

“Our position is a sovereign decision and has much to do with the humanism we represent,” she reiterated.

From the National Palace, she highlighted that “Mexico was the only country, with Foreign Minister Manuel Tello, that voted against the blockade of Cuba. Now many countries vote at the United Nations to remove it.”
