Russia strongly condemns US attacks on Iran

Russia strongly decries US attacks against nuclear facilities in Iran, as it is an irresponsible decision that seriously violates the UN Charter, the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.

“Russia strongly condemns the strikes carried out by the United States in the early hours of June 22 against nuclear facilities in Iran, carried out after the Israeli attacks against the Islamic nation,” reads the statement from the diplomatic ministry published this Sunday on its official website.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry assessed as “an irresponsible decision to subject the territory of a sovereign state to missile and bomb attacks, regardless of the arguments put forward, seriously violates international law, the UN Charter, and the resolutions of its Security Council, which called such actions unacceptable.

For Russia, “it is particularly alarming that these attacks were carried out by a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.”

The statement adds that the impact of the US attack and its possible radiological consequences are yet to be assessed, but it is clear that “a dangerous spiral of escalation has begun that threatens to further undermine regional and global security.”

“The risk of conflict spreading to the Middle East, a region already affected by multiple crises, has increased significantly,” the Russian Foreign Ministry warned in its statement, which also expressed particular concern about the damage the attack poses to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry also called for a swift, professional, and clear response from the UN nuclear agency (IAEA), without ambiguity or attempts to hide behind “political equidistance.”

The UN Security Council, in the Russian Foreign Ministry’s view, must also act now.

“A group rejection of Washington and Tel Aviv confrontation actions is required,” the diplomatic ministry emphasized, urging an end to the aggression and intensified efforts to redirect the situation to a political and diplomatic path.
