The Russian Foreign Ministry today demanded that the United States stop talking on behalf of the UN Security Council when referring to the issue of Iran and the possibility of resuming international sanctions against that Persian country.

Washington must admit the reality and stop speaking on behalf of the UN Security Council on the issue of sanctions against Iran, stressed the spokeswoman for the referred Russian agency, Maria Zakharova.

By affirming that the international sanctions against the Persian Gulf country were resumed, the United States is trying to present something desired as if it were reality, the spokesperson said.

The Foreign Ministry points out in a statement that the illegitimate initiatives and actions of the White House have no relation to possible international legal consequences against another country, and even less do they limit its cooperation by right with Iran.

The efforts to maintain and guarantee the sustained application of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPA), referring to the dispute over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, are still ongoing, explains the aforementioned agency.

UN Security Council Resolution 2231 on the JCPA is invariably applied and the obligations arising from that document must be fulfilled through the regime previously agreed upon under the principle of reciprocity of all states, Russian Foreign Ministry stresses.

Previously, the US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, pointed out that his country foresees punishment for those nations that refuse to submit to its unilateral sanctions against Iran.
