Pope Leo XIV warned this Thursday in Ankara, Turkey, that the world is facing an escalation of global violence that constitutes "a third world war fought piecemeal," and emphasized that "the future of humanity is at risk." He made this statement in his speech before Turkish authorities, diplomats, and civil representatives at the start of his first international trip since becoming the leader of the Catholic church, Reuters reported.

The pontiff pointed out that the unusual number of "bloody" conflicts currently proliferating are "fueled by the prevailing economic and military power strategies," which—he said—aggravates instability and displaces essential priorities for the people. Therefore, he called for curbing "ambitions and decisions that trample justice and peace," warning that such agendas "seriously destabilize" the planet.

After two world wars, "we are now living through a phase marked by a greater level of conflict globally," said Leo XIV. He added: "We must not give in to this! The future of humanity is at stake."

Call for Dialogue

In his message, he urged the strengthening of dialogue and international cooperation, insisting that the world needs "people who practice dialogue with firm will and patient tenacity," AP detailed. He also highlighted the role Turkey could play as a bridge between regions and cultures to contribute to de-escalation in a tense global context.

Leo XIV arrived in Ankara this Thursday on the first leg of his journey, which will also take him to Istanbul and subsequently to Lebanon. His schedule, described by the Vatican as "demanding," includes meetings with political and religious leaders, and a visit to İznik (ancient Nicaea), where the 1,700th anniversary of the Council that gave rise to the Nicene Creed is being commemorated.

Focus on Lebanon

Leo XIV's tour takes on special significance in Lebanon, where many fear a worsening of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah following an Israeli attack earlier this week that killed the senior Shiite group leader Haitham Ali Tabatabai.
