NY movement in solidarity with Cuba grows despite solid measures

Given constant attacks on Cuba, the solidarity movement in New York has managed to increase with more and more young people, in what activist Manolo de los Santos describes as a confluence of identity and energies.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Manolo de los Santos -leader of The People’s Forum project- said Cuba has been increasingly supported because of the complex context generated by the economic measures against it.

“Our struggles are closely linked to those of the Cuban people, what we are fighting for here, which is a fairer system, is precisely what Cuba has been fighting for six decades,” he stated.

The upcoming UN General Assembly (UNGA) will be the perfect setting for those in solidarity with Cuba because it will allow direct interaction with representatives of the Cuban people, he added.

“We will insist that Cuba should not be included on the States Sponsoring Terrorism (SST) list. It´s a campaign we are launching for reaching up to million signatures and we will take advantage from September to November to talk about such an issue,” De los Santos stressed.

In De los Santos’ standpoint, most Americans know that Cuba is not a threat to national security.

“We wanted to take to the streets to prove it, not only in the United States but all over the world. It is a campaign where we are providing coordination, social movements, unions, but also figures and personalities who have the common sense to know that Cuba sponsors peace, health or education only,” he said.

The G-77+China Summit held in Havana represents another moment where politics becomes palpable and interesting for young people.
