Minister of Higher Education of Cuba thanks Russia’s help

The Minister of Higher Education of Cuba, Walter Baluja García, thanked his Russian counterpart, Valeri Falkov, for the support provided by Russian authorities to Cuban students.
 
Baluja said that the said support is an opportunity for Cuban students to become experts in their specialties and work actively and successfully in various sectors such as energy, transportation and other spheres that are necessary for the development of Cuba. He also stressed that Moscow and Havana could take advantage of this moment to boost new researches between the universities of both countries.

Falkov, who received Baluja and the Cuban Minister of Education, Naima Trujillo, at the headquarters of the Russian Ministry of Higher Education and Science, pointed out that Russia is willing to work together with Cuba so as to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

“Our cooperation has a long history and is based on the coincidence and proximity of the positions of two countries on most issues on global and regional agenda, in our attempts to jointly face new challenges,” Falkov stressed. “We believe that cooperation with the Republic of Cuba in the field of higher education and science has great prospects. We confirm our willingness to continue and develop this work,” the Russian official emphasized.

Both ministers analyzed the importance for the development of Russian-Cuban cooperation, which entails learning the Russian language by Cubans.

The Southern Federal University is currently working actively with the University of Havana to establish a branch in Cuba.

In April 2023, the Russian government signed a decree that expanded the categories of foreign citizens who could receive scholarships in Russia. Thanks to this decree, students could take both programs of three university degrees, as well as receive complementary professional training.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Science provides about 100 scholarships to Cubans each year to study at Russian universities.
