Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced today that she will not participate in the upcoming Summit of the Americas in the Dominican Republic, rejecting the exclusion of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua from the meeting.

“We do not agree with the exclusion of any country,” the president stated in response to a question regarding the host nation’s decision not to invite the three states—an action criticized by several regional governments and organizations. Sheinbaum confirmed she would not attend the summit, scheduled for December, and indicated that the participation of a representative from the Foreign Ministry is being considered.

She also noted that, under the current circumstances—following recent heavy rains that have left more than 60 people dead across four Mexican states—“it is necessary to remain in the country to address the emergency.”

In late September, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic announced that Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua would not be invited to the Summit of the Americas, arguing that the decision was intended to “ensure the success of the meeting.”

The move was immediately condemned by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, who expressed “deep concern and rejection of the decision imposed by the United States on the Dominican Republic to exclude three countries, including Cuba, from the 10th Summit of the Americas,” according to a message he posted on the social network X.

Yesterday, during the closing session of the 9th Continental Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, held in Havana, delegates called on regional movements supporting the island to participate in a People’s Summit in Santo Domingo to protest the exclusion of the three nations.
