Mariela Castro, director of the National Center for Sex Education (Cenesex), spoke in a seminar in Mexico on the Lbtgiq community and the Cuban policy for the integration of trans people.

The event entered today its third day of sessions with keynote lectures, presentations, panels and workshops in the central program, and meetings and collateral visits to collectives, unions and political parties, which co-sponsor the event.

Castro Espín, who coordinates the meeting, explained the historical causes of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and made a tour of the main moments in the attention to the needs of trans people.

Training and professional education actions, as well as greater citizen participation, from the explicit recognition of gender identity in multiple legislations and policy documents, were some of the ways discussed to integrate this population group.

Mariela listed some of the laws in preparation that should have an impact on Lgtbiq people, and particularly on trans and non-binary people, such as Health, Education and the Civil Registry.

Mexican activists exchanged with the director of Cenesex about the differences and similarities in the social processes of both countries, based on the recognition of the progress achieved in the island to overcome problems and prejudices towards trans people.

In the course of this day, the panel Science and conscience: the articulation between science and activism for Lgtbiq+ rights will be developed, as well as a scientific dialogue and social activism.
