Havana, November 2 (RHC)-- The President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez received on Tuesday the Member of the European Parliament, Massimiliano Smeriglio, whom he thanked for his activity in support of Cuba and his fight against the U.S. blockade.

Díaz-Canel gave a detailed explanation on the negative impact of the hostile policy through which the U.S. government punishes the island: "We are not talking about the traditional blockade, which has lasted more than 60 years, but about a stage of intensification".

Massimiliano Smeriglio expressed his gratitude for the hospitality and for "the opportunity to see many different things, without denying the problems that exist", in what he described as "very intense and beautiful" hours, referring to the visits to the special school Solidarity with Panama, the Finlay Vaccine Institute, the La Concepción neighborhood in Havana and the municipality of Bahía Honda, in Artemisa.

The legislator said that the parliamentarians have before them the mission of making known to the world what the blockade means and the laws that Trump put into practice to tighten it, to which he highlighted the attitude of Cuba not only as a historical example, but also as a contemporary example of resistance.

With Cuba, the friend affirmed, "we can further develop friendship and solidarity". And he referred to European and Latin American parliamentarians building "a more focused agenda on the real problems, without any neocolonial approach, a symmetrical relationship, as brothers, allowing us to exchange experiences".

"We can see that it is a difficult moment", the MEP reflected on the reality of the Island. And at the same time he highlighted the attitude of a people that is "compact, combative, creative, with a desire to fight". Defining the transcendence of the Cuban resistance, he expressed: "For us this is an example, but not only a historical example but also a contemporary example of resistance; and we know how important Cuba has been for the liberation movements all over the world and Latin America".

Accompanying the president during the afternoon exchange were also the Secretary of the Council of State and the Cuban Parliament, Homero Acosta Álvarez; as well as Yolanda Ferrer Gómez, president of the International Relations Commission of the National Assembly of People's Power of the Republic of Cuba.
