Cuban triple jumper Lázaro Martínez made his outdoor season debut today with a fourth-place finish at the Bislett Games in Oslo, part of the Diamond League circuit.
Martínez, from the eastern province of Guantánamo, recorded his best mark of the competition—16.91 meters—on his fourth attempt, a distance he replicated in his fifth and sixth jumps.
His series showed progression: he opened with 16.79 meters, fouled his second attempt, reached 16.64 meters on his third, and closed with three consecutive jumps of 16.91 meters, all with favorable wind conditions between +1.2 and +1.6 m/s.
This performance earned him five points in the Diamond League overall standings, where he now ranks seventh after two events.
At 27, Martínez arrived in Norway following a challenging indoor season, where he failed to surpass 15 meters in the final at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing.
His showing in Oslo reflected focused work on his approach run, allowing him to exceed 16.50 meters in four of his six attempts and remain close to the podium.
Jamaica’s Jordan Scott dominated the men’s triple jump with a personal best of 17.34 meters, reinforcing his seasonal lead. Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo took silver (17.06 meters), while Germany’s Max Heb claimed bronze (16.96 meters).
Meanwhile, Cuban jumper Leyanis Pérez delivered the most notable victory for the Caribbean delegation, winning the women’s triple jump with a mark of 14.73 meters.
The world indoor champion secured the win on her third attempt, overtaking Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts, who had led with 14.40 meters after two rounds. Pérez recorded only one other valid jump (14.18 meters), but her decisive mark earned her 15 points, solidifying her third-place position in the Diamond League standings.
Liadagmis Povea rounded out Cuba’s participation with a fourth-place finish in the women’s event, reaching 14.31 meters on her fifth attempt after three initial fouls. The Pinar del Río native added another valid jump of 14.00 meters, collecting 10 points to remain fifth in the overall rankings, tied with American Jasmine Moore.
The Cuban triple jumpers now turn their focus toward preparation for the World Championships in Tokyo, while the Diamond League continues to serve as a key platform for their international exposure.
