The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, today declared himself a leftist in a long dialogue with an Argentinean journalist, in the morning press conference at the National Palace.

Why are we leftists, he asked. Because we are in favor of the dispossessed, we are in favor of the poor. To be of the left is to be in favor of justice, to be honest and to be a democrat’, he said.

He assured that his government helps the most needy and ‘there is no loss because people always recognize, always support and that is what allows us to continue advancing and transforming’, he added.

In a transformation process such as the one Mexico is going through, he reasoned, it is necessary to rely on the people. It has been demonstrated that humble people, poor people, are truly loyal, he said.

He said that the right wing is racist, classist, capable of doing anything, and gave as an example the bloody coup d’état in Bolivia against the constitutional president Evo Morales.

He also mentioned the financial crisis in Argentina created by the International Monetary Fund to try to reelect Mauricio Macri, but they did not succeed and are now blaming the current government.

The President gave another example of what the right wing is capable of doing, and said that the so-called Broad Front for Mexico, which groups the National Action, Institutional Revolutionary and Democratic Revolution parties, has just appointed a person indicted by the courts, the former Governor of Tamaulipas, Francisco Garcia Cabeza de Vaca, as its Director of Security.

He insisted that he is in favor of changes, transformations and I maintain that the right wing is contrary to social justice.
