At least 10 people have died after a landslide swept through several houses on the remote Indonesian island of Serasan following heavy rain, emergency services said Monday.

Indonesia’s national disaster agency (BNPD) said heavy rainfall coupled with unstable soil conditions triggered the landslide, adding that the number of dead could rise.

A search operation for survivors was underway but hampered by poor weather conditions and logistical challenges on the remote island, located in the Riau Islands archipelago in western Indonesia.

Images shared by the BNPB show how the landslide tore down houses and trees.

Indonesia is frequently affected by floods and landslides during its annual rainy season, which peaks between December and February.
