Latin America Pushes Forward with Electric Mobility in 2025

One of the distinctive features of 2025 in the region is the strong recorded push toward electric mobility, according to a year-end report published by the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE).
On a regional scale, sales of electrified light vehicles continue to grow decisively, mainly over the last three years. This has translated into the number of this type of vehicle in circulation growing almost tenfold, increasing by 851 percent between 2022 and 2025, the report states.
Up to October 2025, sales of light vehicles in the region increased by 52 percent compared to 2024.
According to OLACDE data, Latin America and the Caribbean had an energy storage capacity in batteries of 1.7 GW by 2025.
This is interpreted as a reinforcement of a trend that is beginning to transform energy consumption in transportation.
These advances occur in a global context where China remains the market leader, with over 49 million electric vehicles in circulation and a 47.9 percent share of new car sales in 2024, consolidating its position as the main producer and exporter, as noted by the site review-energy.com.
It adds that this situation directly influences the region, given that the majority of imported electric vehicles come from China.
The source notes that despite positive results, challenges still exist, such as the high relative cost of vehicles, insufficient charging infrastructure, and limitations in range, which countries in the area are addressing progressively.
This year's OLACDE report confirms that Latin America and the Caribbean are advancing steadily toward a cleaner energy matrix, where renewable energies continue to expand, natural gas is consolidating as the main firm energy source supporting its growth, and electric mobility is experiencing unprecedented expansion.
