The 36th edition of the International Jazz Plaza Festival opened virtually in Havana on Tuesday, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and will feature renowned national and foreign musicians.

On the Ministry of Culture's YouTube channel, social media and Streaming Cuba, viewers will enjoy six days of concerts, master classes, jam sessions and panels at the International Jazz Colloquium.

The theoretical session, first held 15 years ago, will dedicate its lectures to Cuban multi-award winning pianist Chucho Valdes on his 80th birthday, and will pay tribute to conductor and composer Armando Romeu on his 110th birthday, and centennial teachers Frank Emilio Flynn, Chico O'Farrill and Candido Camero.

The event, considered one of the most significant festivals globally, will bring together on stage Maestro Bobby Carcasses, Sintesis, pianists Roberto Fonseca and Rolando Luna, flutist Orlando Valle 'Maraca' and percussionist Ruy Lopez Nussa, among others.

The program includes tribute concerts to late Cuban percussionist Pello el Afrokan, pianist Ruben Gonzalez and 'rumba', a Cuban dance registered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as Humankind's Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The festival, which will close on January 24, includes recorded performances by HotHouse Meets Havana and US instrumentalists Roscoe Mitchell, Hamid Drake and Michael Zerang.
