The National Forecast Center of the Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) issued the first early warning for the high probability of rains and thunderstorms in western Cuba this weekend.

Forecast models indicate that an extratropical low will form between the northern region of the Gulf of Mexico and the southern United States region on Friday, March 22, with an associated cold front that will move eastward.

The text indicates that a band of prefrontal clouds with strong showers and thunderstorms will develop ahead of this system, which will move eastward, over the southeast region of the Gulf of Mexico and western Cuba, starting at dawn and early Saturday, March 23.

The text points out that downpours, rain, and thunderstorms will occur as this prefrontal system moves. It may become strong and intense in some Western localities.

The warning adds that the cold front associated with this extratropical low will arrive in the western region of Cuba, in the afternoon/evening of Saturday, March 23, generating downpours, rains, and some thunderstorms.

The Forecast Center monitors this weather situation closely and will issue weather forecasts and special warnings if necessary.
