Granma falls for the fourth time in Haarlem Baseball Week

Havana, July 12 (RHC) The Cuban representative team Alazanes de Granma lost today 0-1 to Curacao at the Haarlem Baseball Week in Haarlem, the Netherlands, which represented its fourth consecutive loss and closed the aspiration of playing in the semifinals.

Experienced left-handed pitcher Leandro Martinez allowed a run in the top of the second inning, enough to leave the Cuban offense out of the tournament.

Only fourth baseman Frederich Cepeda hit 3-2, while sophomore Osvaldo Abreu and seventh baseman Carlos Benítez had a hit apiece, for a total of four hits in the game.

The Granmenses opened the tournament with a 1-5 loss against the host team, then suffered another defeat against a team from the industrial league of Japan, with a final score of 3-4, and the day before they lost their third game 0-2 against a university team from the United States.

The team from Cuba will face Italy tomorrow in a game of pure formality, because Curacao, even if defeated in the next match, will qualify as fourth and advance to the next phase.

The Japanese lead the standings with four unbeaten games, the Netherlands and the United States with two and one, respectively, while Curacao has one and two and Italy one and three.
