Flight from Mexico reopens operations in Cuban airport

Matanzas, Cuba, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) A flight from Mexico will reopen tomorrow operations at the Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport, in the province of Matanzas, after seven months of commercial closure due to Covid-19, according to reports today.

Kirenia Echeverria, chief operations specialist for that western air terminal, told Prensa Latina that the aircraft belongs to Viva Aerobus, from Mexico, and will link the Mexican capital with the Matanzas airport.

She said that the airplane has 186 seats, and that company will make other connections with this airport on Oct 28-31, and on Nov.1, but it will fly from Monterrey this time.

Echeverria said that the Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport is certified and ready to receive travelers from abroad, with strict measures to protect the health of passengers and employees.

She also confirmed that this Sunday, Oct.25, an aircraft from the United Kingdom will arrive with the first tourists in the famous Varadero resort, after the reopening of this sun and beach destination since Oct.15 to international markets.

She also spoke about another arrival by the end of the month, that of the Condor airline, from Germany. The Azur Air lines, from Russia, and LOT, from Poland, are also interested in flying to Cuba.

The Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport, located between Matanzas and Varadero, is considered the second most important airport in the country for its income and aircraft movement, and is an alternative to the capital's Jose Marti International Airport.

According to statistics, this airport, with 31 years of service, receives over 30 percent of the visitors to the island, and most of the tourists who choose Varadero to spend their vacation, which has one of the best beaches in the world.

Work was planned at the terminal for the low tourist season, which was advanced due to the epidemiological situation caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which caused the closure of the program of arrivals and departures of flights on March 27.

These works took into account security measures for passengers, employees and crews.

There were changes in the signage, and maintenance work was carried out both in the airfield, the take-off and landing runway, as well as in the central building.
