"Descendencias" (Descendants) is the title of the collective exhibition that is still on display until March 1 in the lobby of the Avellaneda Hall of Teatro Nacional de Cuba, as part of the 15th Havana Biennial.
The exhibition, which has been open to the public since late November 2024, features the work of Cuban visual artists, mostly women, and includes the artworks of five Cuban photographers based in the Caribbean nation, three of them living in the United States, and one from that northern country. The project consists of works by Sonia Almaguer, Claudia Corrales, Yari Rassi, Titina (Yoanne), Marila Sarduy, Claudia Millares, Laura Pairot, Leticia Sanchez, US artist Liza Camilo, and Cuban video director Livan Gispert.
According to Mayda Tirado, curator and general producer of the exhibition, their works highlight codes and elements of Cuban culture.
“In this exhibition, the theme of descendants acts as the central stand that unites the artists, each of whom offers a unique perspective on how family and cultural histories are transmitted and transformed over time,” Tirado explained in the exhibition catalog.
Visitors can see from intimate portraits exploring family lines to images celebrating traditions rooted in Cuban culture.
The specialist commented, “These photographs reveal the roots’ depth and diversity that connect these women to their past and their community.”
