The 34th National Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba in Colombia will conclude today in Cali with the adoption of a declaration in support of the island and against the blockade imposed by the United States.
During the final session, activists will gather in a plenary meeting to discuss the conclusions of the working groups held the previous day. They will also approve an action plan for the coming months to support the people and government of the largest island in the Antilles, according to reports from Prensa Latina news agency.
Diego Guzmán, president of the Committee of Friends of Cuba in Cali, will formally hand over the pro tempore presidency of the Solidarity Movement to the host group that will hold this distinction for the next year.
The gathering, held at the headquarters of the Single Union of Education Workers of Valle (Sutev), has been underway since last Friday under the slogan “No More Blockade Against Cuba, Enough is Enough!”
One of the activities organized the previous day was the forum “Update on the Intensification of the Blockade Against Cuba and Continental Solidarity as a Response.”
At that event, Norberto Galiotti, general coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Continental Network of Solidarity with Cuba and Just Causes, outlined how Washington’s unilateral siege against the Caribbean nation has intensified.
He told attendees that, in order to strengthen support for the Cuban people, it is necessary to increase unity and convince more people of the importance of joining this cause.
According to Galiotti, it is essential to “open the doors of our homes to reach all popular sectors, to win them over with the idea that a better world, a world without a blockade, a world with sovereignty, is possible.”
He stressed, however, that such mobilization can only be achieved through unity and the coordination of all solidarity efforts, urging participants to undertake this endeavor with “revolutionary passion, with the passion born from the love of the peoples.”
For his part, Jhonny García, national coordinator of the Venezuela-Cuba Friendship and Solidarity Movement, noted that the Bolivarian nation recently sent to Cuba a vessel carrying 6,000 tons of essential goods.
The activist explained that with the ship Gual, the maritime route of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) has now been inaugurated.
García further stated that efforts are underway with the Italian Association of Solidarity with Cuba to acquire construction materials to assist families affected last year by the earthquake that struck the eastern region of the Caribbean nation.
“It is about finding ways to break the blockade so that Cuba can continue pursuing its development,” he affirmed.
