The Fernando Birri Prize of the International School of Cinema and Television (EICTV) was awarded to "Televisión Serrana," a project founded in Cuba 30 years ago by its creator, recently deceased Daniel Diez.

In an emotional ceremony at Hotel Nacional de Cuba within the framework of the 44th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, EICTV general director Susana Molina delivered the award to the members of that audiovisual community and participatory project that emerged in the eastern Sierra Maestra mountain range and changed documentary filmmaking in the country.

Over the years, filmmakers have shot the inhabitants of that region in their natural habitat, daily activities, and means of subsistence, with beautiful images of the environment and the simple essence of the people born in this mountainous region.

Using pictures, the EICTV, known as “the School of All Worlds”, also paid tribute to Diez and his cinematographic and teaching legacy, which has influenced several generations of filmmakers globally.

During the event, the institution showed its catalog of publications and filmography and some of the leading awards received during the current course. It launched the official call for the 2024-2027 Regular Course.

The Honorary Award recently granted to the EICTV by the Lanzarote International Film Festival in Canary Islands, Spain, for its contribution to the film industry, was highlighted within the context of this 44th edition of the Havana International Festival of New Latin American Cinema which concludes on December 17.
