Mexico City - Uruguayan activist Nicolás Pons stated today in Mexico that Cuba's struggle is that of all the peoples of the region, during the IX Continental Meeting of Solidarity with the Caribbean nation.
A member of the Coordinating Committee of Support for the island's revolution in his South American country, Pons spoke with Prensa Latina about the importance of affirming that "human dignity remains the central focus of our peoples' efforts."
"The model of inequality prevailing in capitalism is exactly the opposite of what we seek, which is to prioritize above all else the essence of human beings and better living conditions," he said, emphasizing the possibility of a better world.
He considered it fundamental to redouble the actions of the various solidarity organizations "in order to generate the greatest possible resonance, denouncing the unjust situation of more than 60 years of blockade against the Cuban people and their Revolution."
Furthermore, he highlighted the historical bond between the Uruguayan people and those of the Caribbean country, as well as the solidarity from his nation's sole national trade union center, the PIT-CNT, with the largest of the Antilles.
"Therefore, our unbreakable commitment to the Cuban Revolution and the people of Cuba, always. In this case, redoubling our struggle within the framework of our ties with the peoples of all Latin America and the Caribbean, demanding the cessation of the blockade" imposed by the United States, he emphasized.
The IX Continental Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba will conclude this Sunday here with a final declaration and new strategies to strengthen support for the island in the face of hostility from Washington.
The gathering has brought together since Thursday hundreds of delegates from 25 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, in addition to Spain, Lebanon, and the United States.
