Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel recognized the social work of Pastor Emeritus Raúl Suárez, founder of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center, on the occasion of his 90th birthday on Wednesday.

"Congratulations to the beloved Reverend Raúl Suárez on his 90th birthday, an entire life dedicated to serving others," the president emphasized on social media.

In his message, the head of state emphasized that Suárez's personal example, his social work, and the love he has given to Cuba have earned him the affection of the people of the Caribbean island nation.

In 2021, Díaz-Canel awarded the Pastor Emeritus the Second Degree of the Order of Félix Varela.

Upon receiving the Order, the reverend said he had not retired, but was in the midst of a jubilee.

Suárez, who was president of the Council of Churches of Cuba, was one of the key figures in the meeting between the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, and more than 70 religious leaders from evangelical denominations and representatives from the Jewish community in April 1990.
