HAVANA – Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel received the President of the Gabonese Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, today in Havana, where the two leaders signed bilateral agreements to strengthen cooperation in various fields.

The official talks were held at the Palace of the Revolution, the executive headquarters. President Díaz-Canel told the African leader that it was an honor for the Cuban people and government to host him for the first time in his capacity as President of the sister nation of Gabon.

The Cuban president specifically thanked Gabon for its historical support in the fight against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the island.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

Both parties expressed their interest in deepening collaborative ties in strategic sectors such as health, education, and agriculture. In this context, they signed a Framework Cooperation Agreement, which will serve as a basis for developing and implementing joint programs and projects between public and private institutions of both countries.

Additionally, they signed an Agreement on the Enforcement of Criminal Sentences, which will facilitate coordination regarding mutual legal assistance for the transfer of convicted citizens from each nation.

A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Ministries of Agriculture of Cuba and Gabon, aimed at promoting cooperation in agricultural and livestock activities.

Tribute to National Hero

Prior to the bilateral meeting, the Gabonese president, accompanied by Cuban Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elio Rodríguez, paid tribute to Cuban National Hero José Martí by laying a floral wreath at the base of the memorial dedicated to him in the capital.

Cuba and Gabon established diplomatic relations on March 26, 1974, and have maintained fraternal and supportive ties for over half a century.
