Cuban president honors revolutionaries assassinated in 1957

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Wednesday paid tribute to the revolutionaries fighters Salvador Pascual, Floro Vistel and Josue Pais, who were assassinated on June 30, 1957, under the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship (1952-1959).

On his official Twitter account, the president evoked some words about the martyrs by Frank Pais, who was the chief of Action and Sabotage of the 26th of July Movement and a member of its national leadership, in a letter to the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.

'They preferred to die fighting rather than be arrested, especially the youngest, who has left emptiness in my chest and a very painful pain in my soul,' he said.

The three young men were members, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, of the 26th of July Movement, a political and military organization created in 1955 by a group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro.

Pascual, Vistel and Pais soon became involved in the fight against the dictatorship and carried out clandestine actions, such as weapons transfers, sabotages and fundraising campaigns.

They were assassinated in 1957 as they tried to disrupt a political rally in support of the Batista regime.
