Cuban Ineymig Hernandez has become one of the focal points to follow in the Open group of the Varadero 2025 International Capablanca in Memoriam Chess Tournament.

Ineymig is a member of the women's national pre-selection and was ranked 52nd for her initial ranking of 2161 Elo points. Her most recent win was on Monday against Spain's Jose Fernando Cuenca, number three in the 119-player pre-rankings.

She had previously celebrated success as opponent of the Cubans Elio Garcia and Kemel Gallo, and for the fourth round she will face the Colombian Santiago Avila, another of the undefeated players in the tournament.

Also as part of this group of those perfect players are included several of the favorites to fight for the prizes: the Cubans Dylan Berdayes and Omar Almeida, the Azeri Azer Mirzoev and the Canadian Alexandre Lesiege.

As for the Elite section, the Russian Volodar Murzin “escaped” after defeating the Macedonian Evgeny Romanov in 76 moves of a French defense and remaining the only one with two points out of a possible three among the quintet of entertainers.

With a draw in just 25 moves of a Queen Pawn opening, the Russian Arseniy Nesterov and the Dane Jonas Bujh-Bjerre resolved their dispute at the other table. Cuban Carlos Daniel Albornoz had a day off.

After these results, Murzin was followed by Danish Bjerre, owner of 1.5 points, Albornoz and Nesterov with one point each, and Romanov with 0.5 points. It is worth clarifying that except for Bjerre and Murzin, all the others already enjoyed the individual rest day in this first of the two rounds scheduled for the group.

Tuesday's matches will be Albornoz-Murzin and Romanov-Nesterov. Bjerre will be observing the play from out of action.
