Participants in the final session of the fifth Conference of Presidents and Presidents of Parliament in the world, highlighted the contributions of Cuba at the meeting held on Friday.

According to the website of the National Assembly of People's Power, in the final declaration of the meeting, carried out virtually, parliamentary leaders concluded that the health crisis highlights the interdependent nature of our world.

They also expressed the need for effective multilateralism, as well as international solidarity.

'Parliaments must give an example in promoting multilateralism and an international order based on rules, firmly defending the international system built around the United Nations,' the document states.

In his message to the participants, the president of the Cuban parliament, Esteban Lazo, reiterated the firm commitment of the Cuban deputies to the principles of the UN Charter, the basis of the necessary multilateralism.

In addition, Lazo denounced that during the pandemic, despite the international claim, the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed for six decades by the United States government on the island, worsened.

Regarding the siege, he pointed out that 'not only does it violate the human rights of Cubans, including their legitimate right to development, but it also curtails and offends the sovereign right of all countries to interact with Cuba without fear of being unilaterally attacked and without attachment to international right'.

The parliamentary leader also referred to the challenges and threats of the current global crisis and called to lessen its effects by promoting multilateralism and fostering international cooperation.

In that sense, he recalled Cuban medical assistance to 43 nations of the world, despite the intensification of the US blockade and its campaigns to discredit 'such a noble endeavor'.

The meeting held this week was organized by the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Austrian legislature, and was attended by representatives of 150 parliaments around the world.

The second part of the event is scheduled for 2021 in Vienna, Austria.
