Cuba today received nearly 470 metric tons (MT) of fortified vegetable oil in the capital, which will benefit disaster victims and vulnerable sectors as part of the collaboration between the Russian Federation and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP),.
Víctor V. Koronelli, Russia’s ambassador, stated that the donation comes from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM).
"We will continue to support our sister nation Cuba, both through international organizations and bilateral formats," assured the diplomat during a simple ceremony held at the MINCIN Distribution Loading and Unloading Center in Old Havana.
He recalled that in 2024, Russia delivered emergency medical supplies and medicines to Cuba’s National Health System, as well as fire and rescue motorcycles, first aid kits, and water purification filters. Previously, food donations of sunflower oil and peas had also been sent.
Koronelli expressed his conviction that this "modest contribution" will provide tangible support to the fraternal Cuban people and the most vulnerable sectors, including children and the elderly, especially under current conditions of the tightening U.S. economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the island.
The Russian ambassador announced that two additional shipments of vegetable oil will soon arrive—one already in Havana and another in August—each weighing 187 tons. "This is clear proof that Cuba is not alone," he remarked.
"I assure you that Russia will remain steadfast in its commitment to this country’s food and nutritional security," he emphasized.
Etienne Labande, WFP Resident Representative, praised EMERCOM and the Russian government’s valuable contribution to projects in Cuba, noting that they provide 32% of the funding for such initiatives.
William Díaz Menéndez, Director General of Cooperation at MINCEX, expressed Cuba’s gratitude for Russia’s unconditional and long-standing support and acknowledged the WFP’s key role in advancing food sovereignty on the island.
He explained that today’s donation will benefit populations affected by hurricanes Oscar and Rafael last year, as well as support bimonthly aid packages for vulnerable groups and pregnant women in five eastern provinces. It will also help pre-position food supplies for rapid response to natural disasters.
"Gestures like Russia’s demonstrate the commitment to upholding the brotherhood and solidarity between our governments and peoples, even in the face of natural adversity," said the MINCEX official during the donation reception.
