Cuba reaffirms commitment to promoting right to water

Deputy Prime Minister Ines Maria Chapman recently reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to moving forward in promoting the right to water and the implementation of the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development (2018-2028).
 
As reported by the Foreign Ministry on its Twitter account, Chapman spoke at the 2022 Social Forum of the Human Rights Council, on ‘water for human rights and sustainable development: good practices, lessons learned and challenges in the implementation of the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development (2018-2028).

At the Geneva, Switzerland-based event, Chapman highlighted Cuba’s efforts in its National Water Policy and National Water Plan to guarantee the efficient and productive use of water and its synergy in confronting climate change and implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

She stressed that the greatest obstacle that Cuba is facing for the implementation of the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development is the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States for more than 60 years.

In this regard, she charged that this policy is a flagrant violation of the Cuban people’s human rights, including the right to water and sanitation.

The Forum is coordinated by the Human Rights Council and it is held annually as mandated by a resolution submitted by Cuba to this body.
