Havana, Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Public Health Minister Jose Angel Portal today highlighted the role of the national blood donation program, characterized by a broad and active participation of the population.

On the occasion of the World Day of that human act, he also stressed that it is crucial to support the need for blood transfusions in times of peace, as well as during emergencies or disasters that may cause a sudden increase in its demand in health institutions.

After acknowledging and thanking in his letter the Cuban volunteers, who contribute with their sensitivity and solidarity to save lives, the official warned about the importance of ensuring access to safe blood for every person who requires a transfusion.

That is why, he stressed, all countries need unpaid volunteer blood donors who carry out this process on a regular basis.

Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives is the motto of the day celebrated every June 14 to commemorate the birth of Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian pathologist and biologist who discovered and typified the blood groups, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1930.

For Portal, this phrase is more than a slogan that summons humanity this year, this gesture in Cuba is part of the daily life of our people, in which thousands of people perform this action with altruism.
