Cuba concludes its discreet performance in world taekwondo cup

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 21 (ACN) With notable performances by newcomers Dalila Villamil and Akely Matos in the last two days of the World Taekwondo Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico, Cuba's discreet performance finished.

Villamil, 20, won in the round of 64 46 kilogram (kg) contenders over Puerto Rico's Veronica Vega and in the round of 32 over France's Rehani Dalya, and lost in the round of 16 to Ying Huang of Taipei, China.

Matos (54 kg) also reached the round of 16, the most advanced stage among Cuban competitors, except for two-time world champion and Olympic bronze medalist Rafael Alba (over 87 kg), who failed to reach the podium after dropping out due to injury in the quarterfinals.

In this tournament, Tamara Robles (53 kg) was the other Cuban representative who reached the round of 16, according to the results tables of World Taekwondo, the leading organization of this sport.

For Cuba, Arlettys de la Caridad Acosta (67 kg) reached the round of 32 and Yairobis Castañeda (80 kg), Guillermo Enrique Pérez (87 kg) and Kevin Calderon (74 kg) lost in the first round.

South Korea came in first place in the men's category, while Mexico led the women's division, in a competition that will have its next edition in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2023.
